Common Landscaping Questions

  • How Do I Know What is the Correct Type of Sod for My Yard?

There are numerous types of sod to choose from. The key is determining the conditions and needs of your project area. These are three of the most common types of sod we install.

    Kentucky Bluegrass

It has a dark green colour with a uniform texture. This sod tolerates full sun to partial shade.

    Fine Fescue/Kentucky Bluegrass Mixes

Since they contain two species of grass, the appearance is not as uniform as pure Kentucky Bluegrass. If you are patching a damaged area or installing next to an existing lawn, this is a good option. This sod is shade- and drought-tolerant.

    Turf Type Fall Fescue

This is a deep-rooted sod that provides excellent wear tolerance. It is also shade- and drought-resistant.

Of course, if you are still unsure which sod is right for you, we will be pleased to help!

  • How do I take care of my newly installed sod?

Proper watering is essential to the establishment rooting of your new sod. However, you don’t want to overwater. This is created by too much water at one time. Water your sod evenly throughout the day. You should be watering for about 20 minutes at a time.

As a general rule, keep sod and soil moist all throughout the day. As much as two to three sprinklings during the day are required until sod begins to root. If it is extremely hot and humid, you will need three waterings. If it is a bit cooler weather, you can lower it to twice a day. You will need to continue this watering routine for 3 weeks.

Watering in the morning or evening is recommended. Watering during the day when it is hot out can cause the water to evaporate and not soak in.

Stay off new sod for two weeks. First mow is approximately 21 days after installation.

Mowing high is least stressful to the new sod. Never mow off more than one-third of the grass blade.

  • What type of maintenance does a flagstone patio require?

Flagstone patios require very little maintenance beyond regular sweeping away of debris. You want to be sure to remove anything that could leave stains or mould on the stone.

If your flagstone was laid in sand, it will likely need readjustments to keep it level as the stone settles over time. If your flagstone was laid on concrete, you will have virtually zero maintenance.

If you do end up with mould stains, you can use bleach and water to remove them. If you do get a grease or rust stain on the flagstone surface, you will likely require a harsher chemical to remove it, but it can be done.

Flagstone is an excellent material for patios. It does not expand and contract with substantial changes in weather. This means a properly installed flagstone patio can last you a lifetime!

  • Why should I work with a professional landscape designer?

Most people don’t have the knowledge, experience, and tools to design and install a landscape project effectively. Sure, there are parts of the job that you can tackle yourself, but working with a professional from the onset guarantees the highest quality.

Planning correctly from the beginning will save you money (and stress) in the long run. Most landscape projects are significant investments, and they should be accompanied by a well thought out and knowledgeable plan. You want your hard-earned money to deliver results that you can enjoy for years to come.

Working with our expert team at Sod Guru will ensure your dream vision seamlessly becomes a reality. We have extensive knowledge about landscape materials, plant and flower choices, and design aspects, and we have the right tools and equipment to get the job done properly when it comes to GTA landscaping!

We stand behind our estimates and will only charge you what we initially quoted you, unless the scope of work is changed along the way.

  • What is the best time of year for a landscape project?

Many people believe that spring is the best time for a landscaping renovation, but it depends on what your project entails. If you are planting perennial or annual flowers, then yes, spring is the best time. Spring is also a great time to complete any hardscaping like river rock, flagstone, patio installation, etc.

If you plan to plant trees, shrubs, and grass, fall is the best time because of the warm days and cool evenings. Additionally, there is increased precipitation that will assist plant establishment.

With fall plantings, you will have a good six to eight months for roots to establish before the warmer months. When soil temperatures are still warm, weeds are less of a concern. Check with us for lawn care services in Markham.
